For example, China’s tunnel boring machine (TBM) technology is a powerful technological support for construction. Tunneling using TBM technology features high automation, significant labor savings, rapid construction speed, single-pass tunnel formation, independence from weather conditions, controllable ground settlement during excavation, reduced impact on surface buildings, and no disruption to surface water traffic even when excavating underwater. When tunnel alignments are long and the tunnels are buried at considerable depths, constructing with TBM technology becomes more economically viable and rational.
A tunnel boring machine, formally known as a shield tunneling machine, is a specialized piece of construction machinery used for tunnel excavation. Modern tunnel boring machines integrate optics, mechanics, electrical systems, hydraulics, sensing technologies, and information technology into a single unit. They perform functions such as excavating and cutting through soil, conveying excavated material, assembling tunnel linings, and providing precise measurement, guidance, and correction. These machines draw upon expertise from numerous disciplines—including geology, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, mechanics, hydraulics, electrical engineering, control systems, and surveying—and must be custom-designed and manufactured to suit specific geological conditions. Reliability requirements for these machines are exceptionally high. Tunnel boring machines are now widely used in tunnel projects spanning subways, railways, highways, municipal infrastructure, and hydroelectric facilities.
